Aurora stanley robinson7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() So I thought it would make a good story to test out that thought and write down everything that I thought would happen as a sort of realism. It's a little questionable, why we want to do it. I think there's a certain craziness in it, or pointlessness - the point seems to be religious, and having to do with species immortality or something like that. I don't think people will try it until they are really feeling quite competent in the solar system, and then it will become kind of a religious act. "Aurora" is a story that I wanted to tell to kind of test out that thought. In "2312", I began to make the case that although the solar system is in our neighborhood, so to speak, and we can definitely visit it and set up scientific stations all over the solar system, that going to the stars - the new data about what we are as bodies (our bodies are biomes) - made me begin to question the starship project, begin to worry that the stars are simply too far away, even the closest ones. ![]() ![]() It's often seen as kind of a desperate act. I loved it and couldn’t stop myself from immediately opening the next book, The Lost Sacrifice! 5 stars. The red-skinned, horned demon and the werewolf with glowing yellow eyes will do as they please with her. And, the behemoth demon has a pet: a giant werewolf. He tells her she has been sacrificed to him, given by her townspeople. In the midst of all this, imagine being confronted by a gigantic demon, so steeped in Hell-fire that flames shoot out of his eyes. Is the surface underfoot a floor, or a barrier keeping out the twisting, wriggling things seen under the swirling surface? And then there are the panic-inducing sounds: howls, demonic laughter, and weird chanting. ![]() I marveled at the creepy, horrifying surroundings described by the author. The descriptive scenes were crafted SO well. Think Alice, tumbling down the rabbit hole, except this is a zip code somewhere near Hell. She is swept into what seems to be an alternate reality. The Last Sacrifice – Book 1: The story opens with the heroine on her way to a Halloween costume party. There were tricks involved, my yes, but they were oh-so-fun to read! This is a trilogy, but I will review each one separately. This set of three books made up a spine-tingling, sexy (adult) Halloween treat for me. ![]() A colder war charles stross7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() Also included are "MAXOS," a stunning example of the new flash-fiction form his Locus Award-winning novella, "Missile Gap" and "Unwirer," a collaboration with Cory Doctorow. His work surveys the content, style and meters of traditional Viking poetry and includes a lengthy poem of Snorrie's own, honoring the king of Norway. Over a period of twenty years Snorri Sturluson, scholar, courtier and poet, compiled the prose Edda as a textbook for young poets who wished to praise kings. This edition captures the magisterial sweep and startling psychological complexity of the Old Icelandic original. Its time scale spans the eons from the world's creation to its violent end. ![]() Its gods live with the tragic knowledge of their own impending destruction in the cataclysmic battle of Ragnarok. ![]() ![]() Its tales are peopled by giants, dwarves, and elves, superhuman heroes and indomitable warrior queens.
